I cannot install any programs or codecs...

I've just installed 10.04 and everything has gone smoothly so far, except for one [major] problem: i can download codecs, plugins or programs [the mp3 codec, flash plugin, google chrome], but when i do click install, it either just ignores me or, at best, the dialogue box tells me it cannot. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Are you using a package manager e.g. Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Center? Can you run this command in a terminal, and if it outputs any errors, post them here?

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
