Red face VLC Player downgrade assistance

When they first came up with this new, more complex version I was horrified by the portable .exe, so I went back to the previous version, and avoided updating it for ubuntu.

The other day I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 (I've been putting it off for a while) and forgot that there was a new version of VLC. So now I'm kicking myself.

    Long story short,

Anybody know the easiest way I can go about downgrading my VLC Player?

If someone asks you to sudo rm -rf anything, don't do it, and don't run any command with rm in it unless you know exactly what you're doing.things i have learnt changing from Xp pro to Ubuntu

I'm talking about the portable version for Windows. I got it from PortableApps.com. Sorry I didn't really make that clear.

Maybe he runs vlc in wine??? Like said before you can install vlc under Linux. Just sudo apt-get install vlc or use synaptic to install vlc. Its ridiculous to run vlc in wine when there's a native version.

The vlc version that came with ubuntu 8.x was horrible with 2 separate windows.
However version 10 has a much cleaner and single window interface again. you may want to try that instead of downgrading:

I'm sorry for my ambiguity. I have two computers, one with ubuntu for use at college (can't use it at home because it doesn't understand wifi) and one with Windows that I share with my family at home. At the time I was using a flashdrive for Firefox, Pidgin, and VLC, which I was getting from PortableApps.com.

When I found that the VLC from PortableApps had changed, I went back to the old version, and then, on my other computer (with ubuntu), avoided updating it.
