I have an 11 year old desktop machine which had Xubuntu 22.04 and 20.04 as dual boot, sharing a separate /home partition.
I have clean installed 24.04 over the 20.04 version with no big problems...
Just to clarify your comment, did you mean separate folder or partition?
Have you tried using a live system booted on that problem machine which may give you an option to copy files you need to another disk.
Is encryption involved? If so you may have to accept that all...
